Alan P. Britton, Irving Lowens, and Richard Crawford’s American Sacred Music Imprints 1698-1810 (C) is a full bibliography, giving complete title-page transcriptions and collations, extensive quotation from introductory matter, details of contents, and evidence for dating; the latter has frequently been accepted as the basis for the HTI dating. It also provides statistics of the number of works in each book that the authors regard as American compositions, and the number of first printings and first American printings in each book. It distinguishes between hymn tunes and other types of vocal piece such as anthems and set pieces. In all these matters the criteria are similar but not always identical to ours.

All ‘C’ items that have a plain number from 1 to 545 are included in the table, which provides for each item either an HTI source code or (in parentheses) the reason why none exists. ‘C’ items that have a letter in small capitals following the number (thus, 29A) are those that the authors regarded as variant editions or issues. These have been included in the table only if they have been treated as separate works or editions in the Hymn Tune Index, and thus given a distinct HTI source code.
